Please make note of the following meeting dates!
Our February guild meeting will take place at the Arvada Police station on Saturday the 23rd from 9 until 4.
For MARCH meeting will be held on Saturday, March the 30th from 9 to 4.
Pam is our liaison for setting up meeting times and it gets crazy struggling to get the space reserved on the same weekend each month. . . it is next to impossible!

It is very exciting to get up in the mornings with just the dimmest sun light beginning to show instead of feeling like I am up in the middle of the night when it is indeed time for the rooster to crow. Of course this past week has been really cold and snowing, and that is always good hooking weather. Looks like we will have a warm up and hopefully Spring will not be too far away.

At our January guild meeting we discussed having a fun play day where we paint a wood cutter stand and then design patterns to be hooked and attached to the side of the stand. Do come to the February meeting to see the design and hear more about this project.

On February 7th, a Thursday, some of our members will be hooking and talking with visitors at the Sew Expo! Theresa has organized our group's participation at this event for several years. We get free demo space for both the February and July shows. We get to hook!!!! and talk with a lot of people who are interested in this fiber art. It is a lot of fun! If you would like to help out with this demonstration, please call Theresa Rapstine at (303)860-1420,  or email her at  [email protected].

Wow! We are well on our way to organizing our May 18th Hook In! Lots of ideas for new ways of doing things will make our hook in better than ever. Do take a look at the photos from our January meeting on the photo page, and we would love to see you at the February meeting!

Our precious hooking friend, Winnie Rodehaver, passed away peacefully at her home yesterday. I know that even though many of you did not know Winnie, you will understand the importance of the friendships she found among fellow rug hookers. It was always a surprise to see her just a day past radiation treatments when she would show up at a meeting or Hook In despite her doctor's warnings. She was a wonderfully voracious wool shopper and took advantage of any opportunity to expand her stash.

In accordance with Winnie's wishes, there will be no services. She loved life and wanted all who knew her to remember her spontaneous smile, her gregarious energy and her determination to squeeze out every last drop of living that she was given.
You can send condolences to her husband, Robert, at home.

Talk about food! Wow! We had a wonderful bounty of food at our Holiday meeting. We did do some hooking and played 2 tables worth of Right Left Center. This fun and fast dice game left 2 Lucky winners with mini stashes of wool.Pam Sisk won one stash and I apologize, but cannot remember who won at the other table.

Hope you all have a wonderful, safe and happy holiday season!

PLEASE remember the following dates:

   •  Our January meeting is on the 19th (3rd Saturday) and the meeting time will once                 again be 12:15 - 4 pm.

   •  February meeting will be on the 23rd, (4th Saturday) and the time will be our
        usual 9 - 4.

   •   March meeting date will be March 30th from 9 - 4.

Our November meeting was so fun! We had a very short "take care of business discussion" and then HOOKED! What fun! We had a delightful visitor, Linda, who made the rounds and talked with everyone about individual projects. I hope that she will join our group! So, most important for every member who will be joining us for our December 8th meeting:
The meeting begins at NOON! Please bring cookies, a dip and dippables or any kind of snack food to share — and also bring (3) strips of wool that measure 3" by 18"!  This can be as is, hand dyed or recycled. We will be kicking off the holiday season with a fun game!

Our thoughts and prayers go out to our good friends Sue — who is recovering from ankle surgery; Lisa — recovering from foot surgery; Sharon — recovering from hip surgery and especially Winnie. We miss all of you!

A Note to Primitive Rug Hookers!

A Letter to Primitive Rug Hookers from Cynthia Norwood

Okay, Guys... here I am---- knocking at your virtual door again... asking and begging you to send entries into Rug Hooking Magazine's annual Celebrations contest. Check magazine page 10 and 11 of December 2012 issue....for all information or read basic info below. or go to their website www. rughookingmagazine.com/contest/
Last year they received fewer than expected entries of primitive rugs.  As primitive rug hookers, we need to share our wonderful pieces and pat ourselves on the back.  We, as a group of rug hookers, don't seem to value our work as much as fine or artistic rug hookers do.  I am hoping we can change that attitude.  The first step is to enter Celebrations.
Yes, there is an entry fee---but if you make it in the line-up you get a free copy. Yes, it's a hassle taking the photos...but I bet most of you have a child, grandchild or relative willing to help if it's something beyond your talent.  ( Best photos are REALLY important) Yes, you many not win....but does that really matter?  And no one will know unless you tell them! and wouldn't it be great to be part of something really neat?
If you have any questions, please contact me.  If would be great to see more primitive rugs in the next Celebrations. Sincerely, Cynthia Norwood

How to Enter To enter your rug, follow these simple rules: 1. Limit of one (1) entry per person. 2. To enter online, click on the "Online Entry Form" link located on the top of the page and follow the instructions for electronic submissions. 3. Or complete the entry form found in the September/October 2012 issue of Rug Hooking. Send your check or money order for $35, made payable to Rug Hooking Celebration Contest. All entries must be postmarked by November 30, 2012. 4. Clearly label the CD with your name, address, name of the rug, and category. Send the CD in a padded envelope. CDs will not be returned. 5. For confirmation that your entry has been received, send it by registered mail or include your e-mail address or a self-addressed stamped envelope. 6. The rug must have been completed in 2011 or 2012, regardless of when you started it. You may enter a rug that has been entered in other competitions. 7. Submission of an entry serves as a release that Rug Hooking and its publisher may publish photographs of the rug in the future, with proper credit given to the artist. This may include promotional materials, online or in print, including the Celebration book, in RHM, and on RHM products.

Wow! This month has flown by, especially since I spent the first 12 days of the month in Texas. Sheri and I drove all the way to Dallas and spent a couple of recuperation days with wonderful friend Lanelle! Thank you Lanelle! Then we went on to Pottsboro on the beautiful Lake Texoma to South Central McGown Teachers Workshop for 6 days. Then I had a short visit with my bother who lives in Fort Worth. What a wonderful WARM visit that TX trip was!
Unlike the frigid temps that Colorado has been enjoying!

Ok, on to Rug Hooking! Judy Cripps will be coming to vend at our Denver Hook In on May 18th. On May 17th, she will be having a mini workshop on creating borders for rugs. Included in the price of the workshop is a pattern drawn on linen! Here are a couple of samples that she sent to me in the mail. BTW, the borders on these rugs are just samples. . . only the interior is drawn out. Come to the meeting tomorrow to see them in person!

November and December Meeting Dates

10/15/2012

Hello!
Since our meetings fall on the 4th Saturday of each month we always have to fiddle with November and December because of the holidays that also fall near that weekend.I wanted to get this information out as soon as possible so that you could plan on these out-of-sync dates for our meetings.

For the month of November 2012. . . we will be meeting on the 17th of the month, which is the 3rd Saturday. I do realize that this date is just one day after Koelbel and that it also coincides with the Heritage Hookers, and I apologize for that, but it is the best we could do.

For December we will be meeting on the 8th from 12 until 4:30. Please plan on bringing a snack to share with the group. We will also have a 1/4 yard wool and ornament gift exchange.

I hope that you have had time to check out the Events page of this website and have taken a look at our teaching schedule for 2013 and also a look at the pattern book/fund-raiser for the next ATHA biennial!

Judy Peterson's fantastic Grenfel Goose
Last weekend's freeze took care of my garden and I have to admit I am looking forward to more hooking time! Of course now it is time to clean the garden beds and add fresh compost and manure for next year. It is always nice to have the time to let it all rest over the winter.! It was the best year ever for tomatoes and I hope next year the crop will be just as tasty.

Our meeting in September was phenomenal! We had 3 program demos. . . starting with Pam Sisk giving a great demo on marbelizing. She brought in many samples of her marbelized fabrics and showed how to utilize both recycled and new wool with this technique.

Our guild Vice President, Jenny Schechter, gave a fascinating description and history of  the LuLu technique. She brought in a  rug that she has been working on that employs that technique and another example completed by guild member Sandy Walker. Jenny showed how to do the LuLu and talked about how to identify patterns that would accommodate the wide loops.

Our third program was provided by Leah Karo who talked about proddy and different ways to use this technique in your rugs. Leah brought a large piece that she is working on and pulled some wool proddy just using a regular rug hook — showing that there is no need for any specialized tools!

There was a lot of shared enthusiasm for all of the programs and I am sure that much of what was learned at this meeting will be utilized to enhance many rugs in the future!

Our guild members decided in August to utilize guild funds to purchase some bolts of backing and a bolt of red dot pattern paper. Quink Arlt has agreed to be  the "Keeper of the Linen"!  Please email Quink (on the home page of this website)  with your yardage requirement and she will be happy to cut the fabric and bring to the next meeting!
